The material

Larimar: the blue stone of the Caribbean

Larimar is a blue pectolite material associated with the Dominican Republic. Colour, pattern, luster and texture can support an observation, but appearance alone does not prove identity or origin; request item-specific records or independent testing when needed.

Five common look-alikes

Know the look-alikes

Polished Caribbean calcite tumbled stones, shown for comparison LOOK-ALIKE 01 opaque · matte

Caribbean Calcite

A blue-and-white calcite-and-aragonite material from Pakistan that can be confused with Larimar.

Origin
Pakistan — not the Dominican Republic.
Composition
Blue calcite and aragonite, not pectolite.
Appearance
Often opaque or matte; appearance alone is not conclusive.
LOOK-ALIKE 02 banded

Blue Aragonite

Similar in colour, but often distinguished by its composition and banding.

Pattern
Often banded rather than web-like.
Hardness
Generally softer and more brittle.
Evidence
Confirm identity rather than relying on price.
Deep blue dyed howlite pendants with pale veining, shown for comparison LOOK-ALIKE 03 dyed · grey veins

Dyed Blue Howlite

Naturally white material with grey veining that is often dyed blue.

Colour
Dye may appear uniform or concentrated.
Pattern
Grey veining differs from many Larimar patterns.
Evidence
Dye may fade or transfer; testing can confirm treatment.
Blue turquoise tumbled stones with dark matrix veining, shown for comparison LOOK-ALIKE 04 greener · matrix veins

Turquoise

A well-known blue material whose colour, matrix and mineral properties differ from pectolite.

Colour
Often greener, though colour varies.
Veining
May show dark matrix veining.
Evidence
Mineral testing distinguishes it reliably.
LOOK-ALIKE 05 blue-green mix

Chrysocolla

A blue-to-green copper mineral material sometimes offered as a substitute.

Colour
Often mixes blue with green.
Pattern
Its figure differs from typical Larimar patterns.
Evidence
Composition, not price, establishes identity.

How to check what it is

01

Buy from accountable sources

Choose an established seller who identifies the item and discloses limitations and treatments.

02

Examine the record

Compare the photographs, measurements, origin statement and condition notes tied to the individual piece.

03

Request independent testing

When identity matters or remains uncertain, ask for an appropriate report from a qualified laboratory.
