Larimar does not emerge from the ground as a polished blue cabochon. It occurs inside altered volcanic rock, where useful material must be located, reached, removed, sorted and transported before any lapidary decision begins.

The journey includes two very different forms of expertise:

• Mining knowledge — understanding ground conditions, access, support, water, ventilation, extraction and sorting.
• Lapidary knowledge — reading rough material, choosing orientation, controlling heat and pressure, and revealing a useful form without sacrificing the stone’s character.
